Cracks, The Beauty In Us All

“Cracks make a person beautiful. Don’t waste time trying to fill them in, smooth them out, or pretend they aren’t there. Everyone around can see them clearly. Accept them, own them, and wear them with pride because they are unique and beautiful and no two are ever the same.” …Dawn G

That was my Facebook status a couple of months ago after seeing the quote below by Leonard Cohen.

All of the experiences we have are the sum total of who we are as individuals.  The ability to see joys, blessings, and happiness is usually borne of great pain somewhere along our journey.  Our failures, losses, and struggles make us wiser, stronger, and more empathetic.  Those ‘cracks’ give us perspective in our lives and add nuances to our personality that nobody else can experience.

In other words, our imperfections make us uniquely beautiful.  All we need to do is stand in the sunshine of self acceptance and let the light shine through.

  1. I love this post, Dawn and I strongly relate to what you say about being able to enjoy life due to getting through prolonged pain. I hope that sums it up as I’m a bit worn out from writing D today. Please try to read D as I think it will really move you. D is an author and poet known or him humour and yet he really knew anguish. Its such an encouraging story, although it’s a pretty long post. I just couldn’t cut it down without losing a vital part of the story.

  2. I’m not sure about being proud of my crackers, but for sure I love the idea that my cracks let the light shine both in and out 🙂
I think this post just made me feel a little better this morning!

  3. As an especially cracked Canucklehead, I truly love this post. Embracing our cracks is when our true beauty shines both inside and out. I also enjoyed the quote by fellow Canucklehead, Leonard Cohen. Reading your post certainly gets my day off to a wonderful start. Thanks for sharing!

  4. “that’s how the light gets in”–I love that. Thanks for passing that quote on and for giving us some often needed perspective when it comes to our imperfections.

  5. If there was a “love” button, I would have clicked it. I agree with this all 100%. I believe it’s important for others to see our imperfections and “cracks.” That makes us real, approachable, and human. Great post!!
