Home

Home:

1. a house, apartment, or other shelter that is the usual residence of person, family, or household.

2. the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered.

When I was younger, home was in the Ohio farmhouse where I grew up.  As I got older, it changed from my first apartment to my first house and so on.  Somewhere along the way, my definition of home changed.  Instead of a dwelling, it became a state of mind.

Home is where I’m with the people I love and who love me unconditionally.  Home is where I can go without makeup, take my bra off, be silly and emotional and grumpy and still be accepted for who I am.  It’s where people learn to accept each other for better and worse, loving them in spite of their shortcomings, and absolutely adore them for who they are.  It’s where we learn to support each other in times of sadness, rejoice in accomplishments, and celebrate the traditions of our family and faith.

To me, the dwelling is important, but home is a feeling.   It’s the place in my heart that is occupied by those who are so important in my life.

What constitutes home for you?

  1. For me home is where you love people for who they are and forgive them for who they are not. <3 Hey, I'm from Ohio, too. Marion. Where do you hail from?

    1. I grew up on a farm outside of Wapakoneta (between Dayton and Toledo on I75), but live in Florida now. My Mom and sister still live there, Mom in Shawnee and my sister and her family in Delphos. It’s a small world!

      1. My brother lives in Centerville somewhere around Dayton. I still have a few family members back in Marion. Haven’t been there sine 2000 though.

  2. Home is where I’m accepted, and where my beloveds are. this weekend, its my friend Sylvia’s house, with my kids, and her family, a state away from where we live. =)

  3. You put it very well. I’ve spent the last 20 years traveling. I’m always at home as long as I’m with people I care about.

    1. We are getting ready to start traveling in November (RV the US for a few years), and it had me thinking about ‘home.’ I agree that it’s being with the people we care about. Thank you for stopping by.

  4. Home is a difficult subject to me as I had a bit of a hard childhood and “home” was a rather dangerous place. But I lofe be your definition. That works for me 🙂

    1. I’m so sorry ‘home’ was a scary place growing up. It’s hard to understand the battles we’ve been given in our lives. I do know one thing, this challenge has made me attached to certain bloggers in the last few days, and you are one of them. I’m honored that you read mine and take time to comment. Hugs! Dawn

      1. Thank you very much and thanks for your lovely blog. It is amazing and I will stay tuned :-). There is always something to discover and to make me think. I like that!

  5. Home is where you hang your hat, lay your head to sleep, lock yourself in then run around in your underpants with music blaring and a bottle in each hand ringing in the New Year, and then hide in complete safety the Day After. That’s Home.

  6. I couldn’t agree more. Last year I was tagged in a blogger tag about what home means to you and my answer is so similar to this post. Home is a state of mind, being comfortable with being exactly who you are and being loved for it
