Thanksgiving was a little different this year. Not only was it just the two us, but we are in between emptying our house and preparing to move into the motorhome. We’ve sold or given most of our possessions away. We haven’t missed any of the items until today during meal preparation.
“Where’s the serving dish for the olive and cheese tray?” Oops. I gave that away.
“Where are the casserole dishes so we can make the green bean casserole and sweet potatoes?” Umm, guess what? I gave them away.
“Where did the wine glasses go?” Yes, I gave those away, too.
The same with my antique Limoges china, silver serving spoons, lace tablecloth, and crystal glasses.
So, with a little creativity and ingenuity, we made practical use of paper plates, aluminum foil, light-weight baking pans, and blue Solo cups. No beautiful place settings, no carefully placed silverware, and no matching serving dishes.
It turned out to be one of my favorite Thanksgivings. The food still tasted amazing, the wine sparkled in a throw-away cup, and the company was superb. The best part was the cleanup. A little this and that and it was over in five minutes. It afforded extra time to plop down for a comfortable after-turkey nap.
It was an exciting Thanksgiving spent counting our blessings, discussing destinations for traveling in the RV our first year, looking forward to our new mobile lifestyle, and coming to the realization that we really didn’t miss all the fancy fixings that we usually go through. It was quaint, sweet, and quiet.
We needed the little break for the holiday, but now it’s go, go, go. Just a few more days until the big move and the real adventure begins.
No matter how you spent your day, I hope it was a wonderful Thanksgiving—so much to be thankful for, indeed.

I’m all for downsizing, but you never, ever, give away your wine glasses or your favorite cast iron skillet!
I’ve learned my lesson, for sure. New wineglasses are on the list, but the cast iron skillet has been passed down to the next generation. I might have to take it back. Thanks for stopping by!

What a delightful article this is. I’m always glad to hear of people who have learned to truly CELEBRATE the holidays and not work like a dog trying to please everyone and meet other people’s standards for decorating and party giving.
