Not far from Las Vegas is a beautiful state park called Valley of Fire State Park. It’s another location with vast, colorful views and unique rock formations. We didn’t have time to take the hiking trails, but the road throughout the park offers many stop-offs for sightseeing and photography.
Every road in the park offers spectacular scenery to enjoy.
There was also abundant wildlife, though I only captured these young bighorn sheep because the other critters are nocturnal. We didn’t witness the bighorn climbing rocks, but were told they navigate them in seemingly impossible ways.
There are some places in the park where the rock formations were interesting. Some of them looked as if ancient giant dogs left piles of excrement. Some shapes were streamlined and breathtaking.
I’m not sure if I was being overly dark in my imagination, but some of the formations were spooky. Here, to me, the formations resemble humans in deep pain and agony.
I’m going to throw the next ones in to see what they look like to the reader.
This was another afternoon shared with good friends, Roy and Judy, and one of our last excursions before they prepared for their journey back to Florida.

Valley of Fire is a unique park to visit because of the myriad of formations, vivid colors, and diverse activities. They have a campground (first come, first served–and it was full), and there is also rock climbing and hiking that offer views even more beautiful than a ride throughout the roadways. It offers something for everyone–from the physically challenged to the athletic and adventurous. Frankly, in my opinion, it’s beautiful and definitely worth the visit.

Wow! I wish we had been closer. I would have loved to visit. Lucky you! I haven’t seen any big horn sheep (but I did see some interesting animals on our trek north). Love picking out the shapes, I definitely see the mama gorilla and the frog! Safe travels.
My favorite past time was pointing out shapes in the rocks. It was a unique place.

Glorious scenery, really otherworldly from my (British) perspective. A hike there would be quite an adventure, though I daresay it would take some serious planning.
We had mobility issues that affected our ability to hike that day. I would love to go back alone so I can take my time and wander through some of the more scenic areas. There is a rock formation they call “the wave” which is supposed to be remarkable. I hope to hike it next time.

We camped here right before Christmas last year and loved it! One of my favorite places for sure. Your pictures look great and glad you enjoyed your time there.
It was beautiful. Their campground was cool, too–but it was full to the gills when we there.

Have a wonderful campout and time with family. We had to leave Springfield early for a last-minute appointment in Florida (an unexpected zigzag), but we are making a point to return later this year. I did finally get to see the aquarium (it was amazing) and paid a visit to Wilson’s Creek again for some photographs. It wasn’t enough time, though. 🙁 I definitely want to check out this state park next time, though.
Your photos are breath-taking. I found sinister interpretations going through my mind. Scenery can be peaceful and serene, but not this.

Geez… We’ve driven over to LV several times and I don’t even recall hearing about that state park. Going to have to mention it to Arn. We’re flying over for a week in a couple weeks. Fingers crossed. Want to see how this MG acts on an airplane. We have a wedding to go to in Baltimore in June, but I wanted to try a short flight to see if I was going to need to take oxygen. Unfortunately it’s only an hour flight from her to LV. Beautiful pictures, btw. Looks an awful lot like Bryce Canyon.
I haven’t been to Bryce, yet, but Valley of Fire is beautiful (and strange). It’s definitely worth the trip, and it can be viewed from the drive through without having to hike. Same with Red Rock Canyon. I’m not quite up to the hiking at this time, but I hope to revisit in the future and be able to do some of it. If you do visit, I’d love to hear what your impression.
We had this park on our list when were we were near Lake Mead, but just couldn’t get motivated to drive all the way out there. I wish we did, but it’s just another place on our list of future stops. Your photos are fantastic. The colors are really striking. Though, your description of ancient giant dogs pooping really paints a picture. 😂
It’s definitely worth a look on a return trip. I need to work on my descriptions, but really…it did.
Well, seeing that you made the dog’s poops description, I had to admit that a description I gave to rock formations in Red Rock Canyon was that they resemble cow patties.
Cow patties is a good description. Despite my less-than-eloquent description, it’s one of the prettiest (and strange) parks we’ve seen. I can’t wait to go back when we’re able to hike a little.
What wonderful pictures! It is fabulous at Valley of Fire. I see lots of pictures in the formations too. My favorite site was Atlatl rock so many fascinating petroglyphs. I couldn’t climb the ladder but the view from the parking lot was just awesome. 🙂
